Who Taught You That? Why Paulo Freire's Ideas Are More Urgent Than Ever

Image
@jorgebscomm for @empowervmedia [Image credit: epitome ] I n 1964, a Brazilian literacy educator was arrested by a military junta for teaching peasants to read; not as a technical skill, but as an act of political awakening. His name was Paulo Freire. He was imprisoned for seventy days, then exiled. The book he wrote in exile, Pedagogy of the Oppressed , became the third most cited academic text in the social sciences worldwide. It was also banned in the country that made it necessary. Today, Freire's framework is a structurally prescient toolkit for an era of algorithmic information management, concentrated media power, and psychological manipulation at scale — and it may be the most important thing we haven't been taught. Freire's central critique was of what he called the banking model of education : the treatment of students as passive receptacles into which educators deposit pre-approved knowledge. Doomscrolling, Information Overload, and Societal Anxiety: A Critical Analysis

Today’s digital clocks, by contrast, lack a fluid narrative, presenting time in stark, static figures. This shift symbolically mirrors our current digital media environment, where the absence of narrative progression leads many to feel as though history or our future is abruptly ending. The sudden, disjunctive experience of digital time creates an emotional vacuum that some interpret as apocalyptic, pushing individuals toward the belief that everything is collapsing around them. Studies indicate that narrative deficits in digital interfaces contribute to user disorientation and heightened anxiety ...

Integrating Media Literacy into STEM Curricula: A Necessity for the 21st Century

Image
Produced by @jorgebscomm for @empowervmedia * FACT-CHECKED ✅ Educators can empower students by blending the analytical rigour of STEM with the critical awareness promoted by media literacy.   (📷:millenniumpoint) The Imperative for Media Literacy in STEM As our society becomes increasingly digitised, the flood of information available to students is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, technological advancements grant access to unprecedented knowledge; on the other, they expose learners to a barrage of misinformation and biased narratives. In the STEM fields, where data and empirical research are paramount, the capacity to evaluate information critically can bridge the gap between technical knowledge and its real-world application. Integrating media literacy in STEM education is not just an added skill — it is essential for nurturing graduates who are not only experts in their fields but also informed citizens capable of engaging in public discourse. Recent data underscores t...

Think of it as detective work for words. CDA digs beneath the surface to reveal hidden intentions in texts and conversations by asking essential questions: Who is speaking? What are their motives? And how does their language shape our perceptions? This approach is especially useful today, as the digital era has transformed how messages are crafted and consumed. Research shows that CDA can help unmask biases and deconstruct persuasive language in digital media .
