Media Literacy Is Not a Fact-Checking Trick

Image
EXPLAINER @jorgebscomm for @empowervmedia Photo: Plann via Pexels · Pexels License Media literacy helps us judge questionable information, but it does not begin or end with detecting falsehoods. It also concerns how we gain access, evaluate what we encounter, use it responsibly, create our own content and communicate with others. A suspicious headline appears in a social feed. Checking the source, opening the article and looking for evidence are useful media-literacy moves. But what happened before that moment? Could the person access better information? What will they do with what they learn? What happens if they repost, remix or explain it to someone else? Those questions widen the frame. UNESCO describes media and information literacy (MIL) as a set of knowledge, skills and attitudes that includes access, evaluation or assessment, use, production and communication . Media Literacy 'To Go': What Teens Really Do When They Smell a Scam Online

Image
@jorgebscomm for @empowervmedia [Image: ALFINete ] W hen you think about "critical thinking" lessons at school, you probably don't picture TikTok clickbait or dodgy online reviews. But a new study by education researcher Jennifer Alford (2023) followed ten migrant and refugee-background students in two Australian high schools to find out exactly that: does the media literacy taught in English class actually show up in kids' everyday scrolling? The answer, encouragingly, is yes (with a twist). Alford interviewed two English teachers and ran focus groups with Year 10 students still learning English, tracing how classroom lessons on spotting bias, stereotypes, and fake news get reshaped once students leave the classroom. Rather than copying lessons word for word, students adapted them to their own worlds: sniffing out shonky product reviews before an online purchase, checking whether a website ends in ".gov" before trusting a health claim, or asking ...

Psychology, Culture, Journalism, and Democracy in the Digital Age

Image
@jorgebscomm for @empowervmedia H How do people decide what to believe? Why does misinformation spread so easily? Why do news stories persuade some audiences, alienate others, and disappear entirely for others? And what happens to democracy when journalism, culture, psychology, and algorithms all collide in the same information environment? These are the questions that drive our latest article, Psychology, Culture, Journalism, and Democracy: A Critical Literature Review of Their Intersections in the Digital Age . This interdisciplinary review explores how cognitive processes, cultural values, media systems, and digital technologies interact to shape public knowledge and democratic life in contemporary societies. Journalism as a Psychological Institution At its core, the article argues that journalism is not only a communicative institution. It is also a psychological and cultural institution. News is never merely information. It is interpreted throug...

Decoding Discourse: Empowering Communities through Critical Discourse Analysis in the Digital Age

Image
Produced by @jorgebscomm for @empowervmedia * FACT-CHECKED ✅ Critical Discourse Analysis is a powerful method to decode language, expose hidden biases, and challenge manipulative narratives.   (📷:empowervmedia) Critical Discourse Analysis is a research method that examines how language reflects power dynamics, ideologies, and social norms. Think of it as detective work for words. CDA digs beneath the surface to reveal hidden intentions in texts and conversations by asking essential questions: Who is speaking? What are their motives? And how does their language shape our perceptions? This approach is especially useful today, as the digital era has transformed how messages are crafted and consumed. Research shows that CDA can help unmask biases and deconstruct persuasive language in digital media .
