How Sure Should We Be? Understanding Confidence Calibration

Image
EXPLAINER @jorgebscomm for @empowervmedia Photo: Anna Keibalo via Pexels · Pexels License A confident judgement may be accurate, mistaken or somewhere between the two. Calibration asks whether our degree of certainty is justified by how reliably our judgements turn out to be correct. A commentator confidently announces that a proposed policy will succeed. Another thinks it will fail but expresses considerable uncertainty. Both predictions sound different. Yet neither person's confidence tells us, by itself, who is more likely to be correct. To assess their judgement, we would need to know what each predicted, the evidence available at the time and what eventually happened. More importantly, we would need to look beyond a single prediction. This is where confidence calibration becomes useful. The question is not whether someone sounds sufficiently doubtful, but whether their expressed certainty corresponds to their a...

The Architecture of Spectacle: A Multidisciplinary Analysis of the Psychology, Sociology, and Ontological Impact of Reality Television

Image
Produced for @empowervmedia Edited & fact-checked by @jorgebscomm O ur enduring fascination with reality television is a sophisticated interaction between media stimuli and the human cognitive architecture. At the heart of this engagement lies Cognitive Appraisal Theory , which suggests that our emotional responses to media are governed by how we evaluate the content in relation to our personal well-being. When a viewer engages with a reality show, they undergo a primary appraisal to determine if the on-screen drama is a threat or a benefit to their emotional state, followed by a secondary appraisal where they assess their own resources for coping with those emotions.  This internal evaluation process explains why some viewers find the high-stakes conflict of competition shows exhilarating while others experience it as a significant psychological stressor. Recent empirical research indicates that frequent viewers often report heightened anxiety and affective dysregulation, part...

Beyond Fact-Checking: Prebunking and the Future of Digital Information Integrity

Image
Produced for @empowervmedia Edited & fact-checked by @jorgebscomm Prebunking misinformation before it spreads builds cognitive immunity.   (📷:empowervmedia) T he current global landscape is defined by a paradox of connectivity where the tools meant to unite humanity are frequently weaponised to fragment it. According to the 2025 Global Risks Report, misinformation and disinformation have emerged as the primary short-term threats to societal stability, surpassing even economic instability and environmental crises. This "infodemic" is not merely a technical glitch but a structural failure of the digital ecosystem, which was originally designed for engagement rather than accuracy. Structural challenges persist because the information environment was built to prioritise viral content, often allowing falsehoods to travel faster than verified facts. The consequences of this erosion are quantifiable across diverse sectors of public life. In the United States, trust in national...

Character Assassination, Repetition and the Erosion of Trust: The Anatomy of a Smear

Image
Critical Analysis @jorgebscomm for @empowervmedia A reputational attack can acquire force through repetition, amplification and fragmented networks of trust. 📷 @empowervmedia A smear campaign does more than communicate something negative. It attempts to reorganise how a person is interpreted, shifting attention from evidence, arguments or actions toward a damaging story about character. In digital information environments, repetition, identity, uncertainty and amplification can give that story a life far beyond its original source. C haracter assassination is defined by George Mason University’s Character Assassination and Reputation Protection lab as the deliberate destruction of an individual’s reputation or credibility through character attacks. Those attacks are public and intentional. That distinction matters: criticism, investigation and accountability can da...

The Personality Architects of Digital Dependence: Who Gets Hooked on Facebook, and Why?

Image
Digital dependence is a public health crisis accelerated by platform design exploiting our core personalities.   (📷:choosehelp) T he landscape of modern life is inextricably woven with online social networks, a phenomenon exemplified by the massive scale of global engagement. Today, approximately 4.8 billion people worldwide are actively utilising social media platforms , a figure that reflects the unparalleled success of platforms like Facebook in providing connection and information. Yet, embedded within this massive user base is a burgeoning crisis of digital dependency, known scientifically as Problematic Facebook Use (PFU) or Facebook Use Disorder (FUD). This is not merely frequent engagement but a pattern of functional impairment characterised by addiction-like symptoms: a manifest inability to control usage, the experience of withdrawal when disconnected, the neglect of important real-world activities in favour of screen time, and ultimately, facing significant negative con...
